AI filmmaker · art director · visual artist
prompting cartographies in the technocracy

Marcus Couto (Marcvs) is a Brazilian AI filmmaker, art director and visual artist based in São Paulo. He uses artificial intelligence as a tool for storytelling and for exploring cultural and social questions, including how emerging technologies reshape our lives, beliefs and perceptions. His practice spans image, text and sound.

He is the creator of ZOMBIEBASILISK, an independent horror and sci-fi project built around creatures, impossible encounters and the language of found footage. By anchoring unfamiliar forms in recognizable situations, his films explore the uneasy boundary between what we see and what we believe.

At UOL, he works across creative and art direction, screenwriting and AI filmmaking, contributing to documentary series, narrative projects and brand films. Drawing on his background in journalism, he uses these tools to revisit historical events, bring overlooked stories into view and connect them with contemporary audiences.

His painting series, Portraits of the Basilisk, examines the cultural fantasies projected onto artificial intelligence. Developed from images produced by an obsolete generative model and painted by hand in Procreate, the works explore bodies, technological remnants and the promise of machine transcendence.

Raised in the industrial landscape of ABC Paulista, his practice draws on horror, hauntology and the philosophy of technology. He was a finalist for the Ibero-American Visual Arts Prize organized by CERLALC/UNESCO, with an exhibition in Bogotá. His collaborative electronic music project, Osasco Dynamics, has been reviewed by The Wire.
